{"id":86,"date":"2009-07-27T11:59:23","date_gmt":"2009-07-27T16:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dollfactory.org\/?p=86"},"modified":"2009-07-28T15:32:55","modified_gmt":"2009-07-28T20:32:55","slug":"its-not-obsolete-its-vintage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dollfactory.org\/?p=86","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s not obsolete, it&#8217;s &#8220;vintage&#8221;&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dollfactory.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/g4cube_tissue.jpg\" title=\"Cry me a river\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dollfactory.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/g4cube_tissue.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"Cry me a river\" title=\"Cry me a river\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>So in order to actually <em>use<\/em> the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153new\u00e2\u20ac\u009d features in the Logic Studio and Final Cut Studio updates that Apple released late last week (which competing apps have had for years, and never mind that they only got to 8.02 on Logic with a metric *&amp;%@$-load of bugs never addressed &#8211; thanks a <span style=\"font-style: italic\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">lot<\/span> for a &#8220;final&#8221; .02 version over the course of two <span style=\"font-style: italic\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">years<\/span>, without real bug fixes before moving on to the next full-number version, guys&#8230;) I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d have to shell out over four grand for a (used) new multi-Intel-core Mac Pro, another arm and a leg to replace UAD-1 cards with a UAD-2 since the new Mac Pros have a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153new improved\u00e2\u20ac\u009d kind of PCI slot, and then several hundreds of dollars for the actual updates themselves. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, those \u00e2\u20ac\u0153flex time\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153drum replacement\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and other handy editing features sure would have been useful, oh, starting two or three years ago, thanks (doing in a couple quick clicks what I now blow entire evenings doing), but for the effective \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gotta buy new hardware if you wanna use the new software\u00e2\u20ac\u009d price of admission, one could arguably buy a workable drum set, tape machine, editing block, and razor blades.<\/p>\n<p>Which, unlike all too many of our contemporaries, we actually <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">do<\/span> know how to use. \u00c2\u00a0Then again, one reel of actual tape costs almost as much as the software update these days.<\/p>\n<p>I totally understand not wanting to continue development for PPC users in the &#8220;gotta keep payin&#8217; if you wanna keep playin&#8217; &#8221; Great Apple Abandonware Tradition, and I was already resigned to sighing dramatically, staring wistfully out the window, and making an appointment with a therapist to help deal with the deep-seated shame, anguish and humiliation of not running the latest versions of Logic and Final Cut until a hefty chunk of change falls from the sky for a new \u00e2\u20ac\u0153studio computer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, but <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">really<\/span>, Apple, did you <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">have<\/span> to add injury to insult by having the most recent \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Software Update\u00e2\u20ac\u009d automatically <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">break<\/span> stuff that was working just <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic\">fine<\/span> before?
